At the moment I’ve been obsessed with hand writing letters to friends as a form of procrastination. Its working wonders, so far, as I haven’t handed in a single piece in yet and I’m miles behind on my readings. It may come down to the fact that I’m just not motivated to do any work outside of the lecture theatres and tutorials, or it could just be the horrible choice of subjects. Honestly, who chooses a unit called “An Introduction to Painting and Drawing” when trying to draw a three dimensional cylinder (with shading) almost reduces them to tears.

I was beginning to think how much fun it would be if I could use a typewriter to type my friend’s letters, and I knew that my mother had one as a child. So I went and visited my grandfather and started rummaging through all the cupboards in his house trying to find this damned typewriter. While I was browsing through all the rooms, my mother was going through her old wardrobe and all clothes that she owned. So I abandoned my quest and started going through her clothes too. So instead of coming home with a typewriter (we couldn't find it anyway) I came home with 3 pairs of acid wash jeans, a couple of blazers, jackets and this amazing fur coat that belonged to my grandmother.

I’ll have to continue hand writing my letters for the while, but I’ll get myself a type writer sooner or later.

I have a dilemma. In four weeks my mother is going to England for work, and in four weeks I have orientation week at University. I have been offered the chance to go to England with her, free of charge, or I could join groups and drink copious amounts of alcohol with potentially new class mates. With my final high school exams already underway, it feels slightly odd that I’m not that nervous. Way back in year 9 when we had our first lot of exams, I was petrified. So much so that I spent the morning of my English exam sitting next to my parents alcohol cabinet taking swigs out whichever bottles I could get my hands on. I took a liking to Johnny Walker, and over the course of the three exams I had to endure, I polished off most of the bottle. So, not only was my first real drinking experience alone (which isn’t that uncommon these days), I was freaking out that I was going to be drunk for my English exam. That didn’t prove to be half the worry as when I rocked up to school 2 hours after the Exam has started because I’d misread the timetable. Eventually I stopped having pre drinks before a every exam and never again have I turned up 2 hours late.
Still, to this day, the smell of whisky makes me feel ill.

It's that day when you're doing practice exams whilst basking in the rays of the sun when you realize that your mother is opening the windows of the house. This wouldn't ultimately be a bad thing if you hadn't spent the past couple of nights filling your window sill with cigarette butts. I ran to my bedroom and was relieved to find the yellowing butts still squished yet totally exposed to whoever would look. Of course I then hid them, and although I was totally terrified for the whole day, mum did not say a word.

Another time I arrived home at 8am because (to my horror) I had been locked out when I snuck out. Thankfully both my parents had already left for work so all that was required of me was to convince my younger brother that I had merely gone out for a morning stroll. My brother later informed me whist eating my breakfast that he was woken up sometime around 1am by my yelling father who blamed him for leaving the front screen door unlocked...even though the keys next to that front screen door had a Tiffany’s love heart key ring attached to it. It's times like these where I wonder if my parents are really oblivious to all these happenings ("Why do you smell like smoke?"

As the days left of school can be counted on one hand, the excitement of leaving school is dramatically increasing. I sit though classes giggling and drawing all over my friends hand and mine like we were back in 7th grade. We lie in the sun (when it’s not overcast and windy) and pretend we’re studying for our upcoming exams. A congregation occurs every time somone even mentions the word muck-up day and girls are seen only wearing their Year 12 rugby jumpers with the unusual navy blue patch sewn to the underarm. These final days of being a Strathcona girl are a little bit sad and frightening, but never have I felt so ready to move into a free life filled with new adventures. And although to my teacher’s horror, I’m fairly sure that in these last couple of days I will be assembling my sailor’s costume. Proritizing and time management are key factors in producing a great costume, exams are still a couple of weeks off.

The best thing about dress up parties is the plain simple fact that you can drag out items out of your closet that you haven’t worn in years. This is due to the fact that these items of clothing are horrendous looking and I really rack my brain as to why I even walked out of the house wearing such clothing items back in the day. Fueled with alcohol, my feet couldn’t even feel the pain that my almost-knee-high lace up boots were inducing which was quite handy as I was able to dance around like mad all night. I'm one of those unorganized people who get a thrill out of doing things at the last minute, that's probably why I didn't go to bed 'till after 5am Friday morning. It's that crazy time of the year where art folios are due in, and this time was no exception to the usual rush to the finish. Although something like pulling an almost-all-nighter doesn’t sound too appealing, I had the best fun. I had the radio pumping, a brand new pouch of tobacco and I found a bunch of lollies that I had collected from various University open days. Thoughts you had pushed away come flooding into your consciousness and turn your head into a black cloud. You can’t see through the fog and even with a light, it’s just too dangerous. You’ve got two options here. 1. Sit and wait. Hope that the fog clears and it won’t be so scary anymore. Or option 2. Get up and run into that black cloud. You don’t know where it leads to, but there’s no point sitting around waiting to be saved. It might be dangerous, but there’s a possibility that you might get out.

It was one of those nights out where I knew that half the people at the party would rock up wearing black leather jackets, which meant that I (obviously) had to find an alternative form of outwear. During my usual draining Friday classes, I mentally chose my nights outfit in my head; black shiny tights, vintage oversized white t-shirt with a Russian vodka logo and boots of some kind. That night, I put on my tights and shirt and went to my cupboard to scout out what other coats or jackets I could wear that matched my outfit. Hanging up on the highest railing was this plain black Roxy blazer that my aunty had bought for me years and years ago. I only have one recollection of ever wearing that blazer and the entire time I wore it I spent pulling at my sleeves so the puffy shoulders weren’t so large. So I grabbed my old Roxy piece and chucked it on and examined myself in the mirror and was extremely surprised at how good it looked. Its black and simple yet it can dress up any daggy old t-shirt. I donned my old motorcycle boots and clomped out my door to have a sweet night, looking good and feeling great.

Seriously, I think I’ve had that same “who drank all the juice” conversation one hundred times over and still there’s no lead on where the orange juice is going. Who really knows where anything is going at the moment?

I May be Lonely But I’m never Alone

“There’s only one star in the sky,” my mother said to me as we cruised along Burke rd. I took my eyes off the road and stared at the big blanket of black sky above horizon. There was only one star. “Maybe is cloudy?” but even in the dark you could see that there was no clouds. I continued to stare into the sky, confused. “What about over there? To the right of me” I gestured my head to the right, then realized I was swerving into the on-comming lane. “Just keep your eyes on the road. Plus that was only a street light.” I laughed at how stupid my mother thought I must be. “No! Over there. In the sky…Oh, it’s only a plane.”
This star was alone in the entire sky. Not even the moon accompanied it this night. Yet even though the sky looks bare, I know that there are more burning heaps of gases not too far away.
